Privacy Policy
BetterCharge ("we", "us") helps you charge your Tesla smarter — including from your own home solar production. This policy explains what information the BetterCharge app and service collect, how it's used, and the choices you have. We don't sell your information, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
What we collect
| Information | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Account details — your email address and an internal account ID | To create and secure your account and to contact you about it. |
| Tesla authorization — access tokens issued by Tesla when you sign in with your Tesla account | To read your vehicle and energy-site data and send the charging commands you set up. We never see or store your Tesla password. |
| Vehicle data — vehicle name, VIN, battery level, charge state and limits, and related telemetry | To show your car's status and to start, stop, and adjust charging. |
| Energy-site data — site name, solar production, home usage, Powerwall and grid figures, and the site's location (latitude/longitude) | To match charging to your solar surplus and to tell whether your car is plugged in at home. |
| Subscription status — information from Apple about your BetterCharge subscription (for example: active, trial, renewal, or expiry) | To unlock the features you've paid for. Apple handles payment — we never receive your card details. |
| Device push token | To send you notifications you've enabled. |
| Diagnostics & usage — app errors, performance measurements, and how features are used | To find and fix problems and improve the app. Not used for advertising. |
Who we share it with
- Tesla — your vehicle and energy-site requests go to Tesla's systems, under Tesla's own terms and privacy policy.
- Apple — subscriptions are purchased and managed through the App Store under Apple's terms.
- Service providers who host and operate our infrastructure and send our email, only as needed to run BetterCharge.
- Legal reasons — if required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the service.
We do not sell or rent your personal information.
How long we keep it, and deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your account details, your Tesla authorization, your notification tokens, your subscription records with us, and your account's connection to your vehicles and energy sites.
Status and telemetry history recorded for a vehicle or energy site (for example, charge levels and solar production over time) is kept after your account is deleted, but it is no longer linked to you or to any account. We currently keep this history without a set time limit, and we'll update this policy if that changes.
Canceling your subscription in Apple's settings does not delete your account; your data remains until you delete the account.
Your choices
- Disconnect your Tesla account from within BetterCharge, or revoke BetterCharge's access from your Tesla account settings.
- Turn notifications off in iOS Settings.
- Ask us for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing the address below. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law (for example, California and Canadian privacy laws); we'll honor those requests.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, Tesla tokens are stored encrypted, and access to production systems is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Children
BetterCharge is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
Terms of Use
The service
BetterCharge works with your Tesla account to monitor your vehicles and energy sites and to start, stop, and limit charging based on your settings and on live solar and vehicle data. BetterCharge is not made by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Tesla, Inc. "Tesla" and "Powerwall" are trademarks of Tesla, Inc.
Subscription & billing
- BetterCharge requires a subscription: $6.99 per month (or local equivalent) after a 1-month free trial. The trial is available once per Apple ID.
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID at the end of the trial. The subscription renews automatically each month unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Manage or cancel any time in your Apple ID settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions). Refunds are handled by Apple under its policies.
- If a renewal payment fails, access to subscription features stops until payment succeeds.
Your responsibilities
You're responsible for your Tesla account, your vehicle, your home electrical setup, and for using BetterCharge lawfully and safely. By connecting a vehicle, you authorize BetterCharge to send charging commands to it on your behalf, and you confirm you're allowed to do so.
No guarantees
BetterCharge relies on Tesla's systems, network connectivity, and live estimates of solar production and usage, so it can't guarantee a particular charge level by a particular time, any specific cost savings, or uninterrupted availability. The service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Always make sure your car has the charge you need.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BetterCharge is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for losses arising from vehicle, charging, or energy-system behavior. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for BetterCharge in the 12 months before the claim.
Changes and contact
We may update these terms; continued use after an update means you accept it. Questions about this policy or these terms: hello@betterappslab.com.
